Set in Ukraine 1941, this is a breathtaking journey of survival in the dark days of WWII. Max is the devoted caretaker of a wildlife reserve, and the wild Przewalski's horses that wander there. He has learnt to keep secrets from the Nazi occupiers, particularly the secret of Kalinka, who having lost everything is hiding in the reserve. All she has is her relationship with the endangered animals. An extermination programme leaves only two surviving horses, and Kalinka sets off on a journey to save them.
