When Laurel is set an assignment to write a letter to a dead person, she chooses Kurt Cobain, who died young, just like her sister. Soon Laurel embarks on a torrent of letters to all sorts of dead people, sharing what it's like going to a new school, meeting new friends, falling in love, and the effects on her family.
